Apple has just released its new lineup of Pro laptops, but are they worth the price tag? Let’s find out.
Starting with the specs, this is the base line 15” MacBook Pro w / Retina Display which means it includes a 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GBs of RAM, 256 GBS of flash storage, and intel iris pro graphics. It measures just over half an inch thin and weighs in at four and a half pounds.
On the left side you’ll find a MagSafe 2 power port, Two Thunderbolt 2 ports , a USB 3.0 port, a headphone jack, and dual mics.
Even though externally nothing has changed on this new MacBook Pro, I’m always impressed with the immense attention to detail Apple puts in. The build quality is stellar with the whole kit being carved out of aluminum. Not only that but the laptop is extremely minimal, sleek, and elegant. I have yet to see another product compete with Apple’s build.
Coming from a 2012 13” MacBook Pro, I love the fifteen inch form factor. Having the extra space on each side of the keyboard makes typing documents on the go a much more enjoyable experience. The backlit soft to the touch keys are extra clicky and the trackpad is smooth and responsive.
As far as the retina display goes, it’s just incredible – it’s almost too good if there’s even such a thing. Using the retina display makes looking at anything under 4k resolution impossible. That’s why after purchasing it I just couldn’t use my 23” AOC 1080p monitor anymore. I ended up selling it and picking up a new 4k display from Dell. The name escapes me now, but I’ll link you all to it.
When it comes to the battery life, the only way you’ll get the eight hours of battery Apple promises is if you’re just doing basic web browsing. Once you open up skype, spotify, and a couple of social media apps that will be auto refreshing you can expect the battery to start draining a bit quicker. For me though I was able to get through a full work day which includes a couple hours of video editing and a little bit of web browsing here and there. All in all though, I was impressed with the batter life.
Moving on to performance, this is the most powerful machine I’ve ever used. It just flies, everything is just so quick and responsive. Video export times are ultra fast and I haven’t felt a stutter of lag whatsoever. If you’re interested in specific benchmarks then I’ll have a link here to our speed and performance test.
One thing I’ve noticed that’s very impressive is the cooling system. The only time the pro gets warm is when I’m doing heavy video editing, but even then it doesn’t get very hot. The fans have actually only had to kick in once or twice during the time i’ve been using it which amazes me.
If you’re looking for a laptop to lounge around the house and browse the web with, this MacBook Pro might not be for you, but if you’re looking for a portable on the go machine with a great display, solid battery life, and ultra powerful internals, I think you’ve found your next purchase. Anyway, if you’re interested in picking up this new 15 inch MacBook Pro I’ll have a link below to where you can pick one up.
